I was able to make this little drawing of the Burgomaster on the spot from ter Borch’s painting while visiting the Nelson Atkins’ recent exhibition, Reflecting Class in the Age of Rembrandt and Vermeer.
Ter Borch’s twin pendant portraits are stark in composition and lighting. Rather than being overshadowed by Borch’s virtuosity, the sitters’ personalities seem to be expressed through the black satin, through the lace, the shoes, through the velvet. These are wonderfully humanizing portraits.
Trust me when I say the image below cannot do justice to the original. Be sure to visit this show before these gems return to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 29th.
